LIVING JUDAISM with Rabbi Lisa Hochberg-Miller
In Wisdom of our Sages, Talmud Avot, we are taught: "the world is balanced by three things- by avodah- prayer; by torah- text/knowledge; and by gimilut chasidim; by action. Our class this year is divided into three parts:
Avodah/Prayer- deepening our connection, deepening our practice. By both studying the heart/soul of the prayers we pray (in Hebrew and English), and by learning Jewish spiritual disciplines to enhance our practice, we can seek to deepen the experience of prayer for ourselves. Increasing our mastery of both the sanctuary and the prayer experience is our focus.
Action- Applying Judaism to our ethical behavior and our ritual behavior; how do we live Jewishly, as we study, discuss classic and contemporary issues and try out new and old rituals.
Torah/Revelation- this third part is open to all, but is focused on preparing those who wish to be part of an Adult Confirmation experience. How do we understand God and what does ongoing revelation mean to our greatest thinkers and to us? The Adult Confirmation is for those who have accumulated at least 14 credits in Adult Learning here at TBT over the past three years. Please check with Janis Knight to verify your credits. Adult confirmation will be held the morning of Saturday, June 11th, the Shabbat morning following Shavuot, the giving of Torah at Sinai. This creative service will be participant led, and inspired!
Sundays 9:30-11:30 a.m. (NEW TIME!) Dates: September 19 & 26;October 17;November 7- Global Day of Learning, November 14; December 5, 2010; January 23; March 6 & 13; April 10 & 17;May 1-Special Yom HaShoah Program; May 22; June 12, 2011.

FALL 2010 Death and Suffering: An Introduction to Jewish Humor (a/k/a “Crazy Wisdom”)
Ancient Jewish teachings grapple with the question of God's role and/or responsibility in personal and global tragedy. Is God on vacation? And if so, does God ever check the divine voice mail or Blackberry during such absences? Whatever happened to all those dramatic "God to the rescue" miracles we'd been inundated with via the stories of our ancestors? Who's on first?
Led by Rabbi Gershon Winkler Tuesday evenings, 7:00—8:30 p.m. October 5, 12, 19, 26; November 2 & 9. Students will be asked to offer donations directly to the teacher on the day of class.
SPRING 2011 Men are from Minsk, Women are from Pinsk: The Jewish Version of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus
The big hullabaloo going on these days around the notion that Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus is nothing new against the backdrop of ancient Jewish teachings around gender politics. In this series, Gershon will introduce the lesser-promulgated teachings of Jewish law, lore, and mysticism that help us understand the more cosmic interplay of the masculine and feminine forces that affect our lives.
Led by Rabbi Gershon Winkler Tuesday evenings, 7:00—8:30 p.m. Students will be asked to offer donations directly to the teacher on the day of class.
Jewish Literacy Book Group Led by Fern Perusse-Filzen
The Jewish Literacy Book Group is designed to encourage you to enjoy Jewish fiction—reading old favorites, discovering new works and discussing them with other enthusiasts. By popular demand, Fern Perusse-Filzen will coordinate the discussions on this year’s chosen works: "The Moses Expedition", by Juan Gomez-Jurado; "The Source" by James Michener; and "By Fire, By Water" by Mitchell Kaplan.
The group will meet three times during the year, on Shabbat (Saturday) afternoons for a dairy/vegetarian potluck lunch and discussion in Meister Hall. There is no charge and all are welcome. Please read each book in time for its scheduled discussion.
The Moses Expedition - January 29th 12:30 p.m. The Source - March 5th 12:30 p.m. By Fire, By Water - July 16th 12:30 p.m.

PARDES Text Study Program
Join Rabbi Lisa, Cantor Michael and Janis for a lively half-hour interactive discussion of the weekly Torah portion. From approximately 11:15 – 11:45 a.m. every Shabbat on which there are no b’nei mitzvah services, we will engage in Torah study together during the Shabbat morning service. Materials will be prepared and provided for each session, including midrashic and other commentaries.
This is our third year of studying Torah and sacred text together during services. This year, we will be focusing on Midrash, the stories created by the rabbis and scholars to answer questions raised by the original Torah text. There is ample midrashic material, both ancient and modern, to help us engage with Torah in yet another way. Come prepared to hear stories and to share your own.
GLOBAL DAY OF JEWISH LEARNING
TBT is proud to be hosting the Ventura County community site for the Global Day of Jewish Learning. Five rabbis from our community will be leading dynamic and interactive sessions. Each student will have the opportunity to study two different themes during our morning together.
